Federal Way Tree Service ProsFederal Way, WA tree service referrals

Federal Way neighborhoods we serve

We take requests from anywhere within Federal Way city limits (most addresses are in ZIP codes 98003 and 98023). A Federal Way mailing address doesn't always mean you're inside the city, and tree rules follow city limits. Here's what tree work looks like around town.

Tree service in Twin Lakes

The northwest corner near Dumas Bay and Dash Point State Park, named for Lake Lorene and Lake Jeane. Mostly 1960s–80s homes, now surrounded by mature firs and cedars. Lakeside and bluff-side lots often run into critical area buffers.

Federal Way permit note: Federal Way regulates more tree removal than most nearby cities. The city's handout for developed single-family lots says removing trees and vegetation requires city approval unless an exemption in FWRC 19.120.030 applies. Often that's written approval rather than a full permit. A permit and a Tree and Vegetation Retention Plan from a qualified expert may be required if the tree is in an environmentally critical area (wetlands, streams and habitat areas, landslide or erosion hazard slopes, flood areas, aquifer recharge areas), if it was required to be kept under an earlier development permit, or if removal would change stormwater flow. Hazard trees outside those situations can be removed without approval. Trees 6 inches and up count toward a minimum tree density, so replacement planting may be required, and the city treats topping the same as removal. The city's handouts date from 2015–2016, so call the Permit Center at (253) 835-2607 or email [email protected] before cutting. See the city's Permit Center page. If you're unsure, check with the city.

Outside Federal Way city limits?

If you're in Des Moines, Kent, Auburn, Milton, Fife, Northeast Tacoma, unincorporated Dash Point or Browns Point, or unincorporated King County nearby, go ahead and send your request. If the tree service can't cover your address, we'll tell you. Every city and county has its own tree rules, so the Federal Way approval note above applies only inside Federal Way.
